Over the last few years I have noticed an increase in the number of articles about introverts online. Some are blog posts; others are informational or editorial pieces, while still others are scientific articles. There are articles which seek to explain introversion to extraverts: explaining that introverted behavior isn’t an act of rejection, a sign of aloofness or arrogance, or even wrong. Alongside those you can find articles which are by introverts and for introverts discussing various techniques to use to function in a society that favors extraverts.
Articles like these have been seen online as long as there has been an online. However, here seems to be a recent boom of the topic. Are more articles about introverts appearing as more introverts come out of their shells, or is something else going on?
On the surface, it seems like these articles explaining introverts to extraverts exist to remove the stigma of introversion. But, is this making introversion somehow cool? Will faux introversion become a trend supplanting geek chic, or is it just a byproduct of the nerd as a public figure? Are we soon to be surrounded by ersatz shoe-gazers with an appreciation for silence?
